Smitherman & Barnwell, Trunkt
We’re all overfamiliar with the glassy-eyed moms pushing prepubescent daughters as pretty dolls, dads hyper-determined their sons sashay out of Harvard as top-notch lawyers…
Ah, to live vicariously through one’s kid. Years away from popping one out myself, that scene of twisted regrets and secondhand ambition seems very far away.
And then, while waltzing through Trunkt’s Tribeca boutique, I came upon Smitherman & Barnwell: pretty pastel skirts and matching dress-jackets of brocade, pure early Jackie O, only for the wee, wee ones.
And while I am a wee one at 5’3, I am not wee enough.
So, I’ve already decided my future little Suzy will be sporting some S&B, destined for best-dressed greatness at birthday parties, in yearbook photos, and on jungle gyms.
Apparently, though, Suze has already got some competition, besides all the other little ladies wearing their Tuscany-inspired tea party dresses — S&B also styles pampered puppies.
Dubbed the Risotto Collection, after designer Vondra Barnwell-William’s beloved Yorkie, the name — like the rest of the line — is all about amore for Italia. And because Mr. Risotto inspired sophisticated capes and hand-knit sweaters that I can never wear, and I’m a wee young for a little Suzy…
Maybe I’ll buy a poodle.
