Though an avid tree climber in my youth, I’ve grown far from hugging the plants. Many friends go green, seeing an enthusiastic paper shredder, watching an extravagant paper towel user, observing my deaf ear to shade-grown coffee (though the brain does perk up at the mention of caffeine-laced anything).
Maybe my Republicanism towards trees is because worshipping greenery is forever linked to Birkenstocks over socks, the cultivation of body hair normally shaved in most of the West, and an excess of Bob Marley records.
Yes, for all my homegrown creativity, I’m still fertile ground for stereotypes.
But I’m weeding them out, sowing seeds that may keep me from squealing “Ew! Ewewewewew…” on my next hike — I’ve taken to the naturally elegant, leaf-printed linens of home accessories and stationery line Inleaf.
“I think nature provides the most profound and well composed forms of art, whether you look at the fall foliage covering a spectacular mountainside, or examine a single sunflower,” says Inleaf founder Lotta Helleberg. “Everything is there — harmonious colors, form, and functionality. Since I use actual leaves for printing, my work mimics nature in one sense, but I am much more interested in the pattern each leaf makes rather than true representation.”
I can dig it.
And since Kate Moss was seen sporting moccasin boots, I might even get over my aversion to hippies.
