German Shepherds, In My Country

My German Shepherd Major Dukes goes everywhere with me. And everywhere we go, I get stopped by someone who has a friend whose mother had a sister whose grandfather had a neighbor who might have seen a German Shepherd on TV. And if someone’s not telling me that their second cousins’s uncle’s friend’s brother’s ex-girlfriend’s dad raised or trained or grew up with a German Shepherd bigger and better looking than Major, they’re asking Major if he’s having a good day and if he knows what a good boy he is oh yes he is.
In hopes of saving my sanity, I’ve decided to document the choicer quotes from my encounters. Here’s my favorite…
I was deeper in the heart of the San Fernando Valley than Kurtz in the heart of darkness, hoping to get records from a veterinarian who only held clinics in pet stores. The waiting area was full of rats on leashes and in crates, and an older man admired Major.
“Oh, yes, the German Shepherd. The German Shepherd are the most loyal, the most smart. So smart. Most intelligent.”
I smiled.
“In my country, I had a German Shepherd. So loyal, so smart. One day, in my country, my German Shepherd he was lost in the woods. And then, two weeks later, my German Shepherd shows up on my door and he has a broken leg but he has returned.
“So smart, so loyal. The most intelligent, the most loyal dog.”
I smiled.
“In my country, my best friend, he had a German Shepherd. So smart, this dog. The most loyal. And then, one night, in my country, my friend, he comes home and it is dark and he is wearing someone else’s clothes.
“And my friend, his German Shepherd, he kills him!
I smiled.
“The German Shepherd. So loyal. The most smart dog.”
